CENTRAL ISLAND NATIONAL PARK
Central Island National Park is also known as the crocodile Island though look to be a volcanic island located in the center of lake Turkana. This national park is full of cones, craters and some having small lakes within. This national park has more than a dozens of craters. The national park is under the Kenya Wild Life Authority and hold the largest number of breeding crocodile in the whole world called the Nile Crocodile
What to see
Venomous reptiles and pre-historic fish
This national is known worldwide for the production of the most venomous reptiles including the saw-scaled viper and the puff adder and the cobra. There are also many rare fish species including the Nile Perch, large group and the large Tilapia, puffer fish of which such specie is found in the seawaters of indicated that the Turkana were once connected to the Red sea
Birds
This place is also inhabited by abundant bird species of which over 84 water bird species exist here and u lest 34 of these are from Europe or migrated from that side. The rest of the species are viewed in month of March and the month of May when the migratory birds have come back. about 23 species of these birds lay here and breed here. Some of these include, Goliath heron, African Skimmer. And some of these birds like open billed stock, ducks and gull’s birds feed on the shores of the volcanic island lakes attract lesser flamingos. There also exist nocturnal birds and the birds of prey.
Crocodiles.
Lake Turkana was estimated to have 12000 crocodiles though that number has not changed in over 130 million years. The size of these crocodiles is unique and they live in harmony eating other marine sea living and fish. Between the month of April and the month of May, crocodiles breed on the shores of the crater lakes and that’s where eggs are buried beneath the sand for protection from other egg eater they are then removed and taken under water to spend the first month. This place is the world’s largest crocodile hatching or production area
Boat rides
This national park since is an island, boat ride is also a mean of transport here, the boat cruise is also used around the national park as the visitors move around to see wildlife they cruise with boat having good moments
The national park is also famous for the wildlife species like hippos, bats largest Nile Crocodiles population and many others which can be visited.
Getting around
Driving by road from Nairobi to Kalokol on lakes in western shores while passing via Kitale and Lodwar from Kalokol hires a boat to central Island National Park through Kalokol main and the only gate
The national park has also got two main airstrips from Kenya. a domestic booking is required for the visitors who use the air mean from any airstrip or airport in Kenya until Central Island National Park.
Things to Do
Birding
Visiting the Central Island National Park will bring you access to numerous bird species of which the commonly viewed are the flaming birds at the flamingo lake. There exist another group of bird species which tend to be at the sea including the migratory birds.
Fishing
This is done using nets and the boats. Since the national park is located in the center of lake Turkan, that is known for fishing. Some of the fish species here include the Nile perch, tilapia and the catfish
