DOROB NATIONAL PARK
Dorob national park is a protected area in Erongo along the central Namibian coast which is 1,600 kilometers 990miles in length. It was gazetted into a national park under the Nature Conservation Ordinance N0. 4 of 1975 on1 December 2010 and with Namib- Naukluft Park covers an area of (107,540 square miles). The park extends from the Kuiseb Delta (south of Walvis Bay), north to the Ugab River, and west from Atlantic Ocean to what was before the National West Coast, Tourist Recreation Area. Some 75 species of birds, flock to this coast, with nearly 1.6 million birds recorded on the coast.
Dorob National Park has s spectacular coastal dune belt, vast gravel plains, Namibia’s richest coastal area for birds, rich botanical diversity, and major ephemeral river system and their river mouths. the central coast line of 1600 km 990miles which includes the Dorob National Park, is an area of hyper arid desert.
Some 75 different bird species flock to the coast with nearly 1.6 million birds recorded on the coast. Bird life International has therefore include the park under the category of Important Bird Area. The Damara term, species of tern in the family Damara. A sea breeding seabird which is endemic to Namibia and is considered a flagship species of the coastal area, and is found in the park, although non-breeding individuals will migrate to the north in winter. Some of the lichen fields are also part of this protected environment.
ACTIVITIES AT DORO NATIONAL PARK
Camping around the Dorob National Park can be carried out throughout the year although you will need to first find out if camping is available the time that you would want to visit the National Park. There are specific places where you can camp that have been gazetted by the park authorities and you are expected to follow all these rules for your own safety. Game viewing through the Dorob National Park is carried out throughout the whole year due conducive weather and you will find that some animal roam around the coast which makes it easy for animal watching. The animal species that that live with the Dorob National Park include the springbok, cape fur seal, brown hyenas, black backed jackal, spotted hyenas, and many other animal species
Birding in Dorob
This national park is known for having recorded over 270 different bird species and these at least can be seen the whole year due to the presence of Atlantic coast. Some of the bird species that you will get to see while here include the cape teal, Buchelle’s courser, the blue jay, pink lesser flamingo, the Damara tern and many others including the migratory birds. Do not forget to take your camera or binoculars plus appropriate clothing as you head out for fishing in this national parks
Hot air Balloon rides
The hot air balloon rides in the Dorob national park are carried out in the morning because of the required air to drive this balloon. This activity can be done for the whole year. There are few marked trek routes through the park though the animals will be seen from a clear eagle view down and you feel the cool and the fresh of the Dorob National Park.
This however will be requiring a tour guide not to get lost and end ever to carry enough water while on your tour through the Park.
Fishing in this national park is normally done at the coast of Namibia in the Atlantic Ocean because of the presence of the trans-Kalahari highway that helps in the easy transportation of the fish to different areas and in this ocean of which has a lot of fish species and these include, pilchard fish, mackerel fish sharks and Dolphins and any others.
There are other activities like driving through the desert experience, sky diving in swakopmund, visiting the jetty and many others
