SIBILOI NATIONAL PARK

Sibiloi National Park was established in 1973 by the Kenya government for the animal protection and the paleontologist sites around the national park in the area. The national park covers an area of 1570 square kilometers though its known as the best place that a lot of fossils exist and the best in Africa. Some of these important archeological sites include, Koobi Flora where the remain fossils have helped in research to understand more about human and human kind evolution than any other archeological site in Africa. The national park and the place is characterized by semi desert, open plains made up of volcanic formations including mountain Sibiloi and its where the remains of the petrified forest can be found

Visitors shouldn’t expect any other waterbody or apart from the Lake Turkan which provide water in that area as the rest of the place is semi-arid.  Visitors should also expect game viewing, the migratory waterfowl, plains and marauding predators, the largest desert lake worldwide Lake Turkana

wildlife

Sibiloi national park is rewarded with a number of wild life species including those which are capable of sustaining the desert life. some of the wild animal species here include, gravy’s Zebras, Beisa, Greater Kudu, lions, cheetahs, striped and spotted hyenas, and many other animals that can live in the desert

This national park act as a breeding place for the Nile crocodiles in the Northern border of Kenya and Somalia. The National Park is also known for inhabiting over 350n reptile species

Birds

Sibiloi National Park is known to have a high concentration of a large number of the Flaming birds though Lake Nakuru has a higher number compared to the Sibiloi National Park. Some of the birds within the Sibiloi National Park include, the Somali Ostriches, chestnut bellied sandgrouse, fox kestrel, ducks, pelicans, Taita, falcon, black tailed godwit and many other birds.

Vegetation and the curse tree species.

The so called petrified forest is one of the unique attractions tourists shouldn’t miss because it’s not everywhere. They also consist of numerous fossils on the trees dating back to prehistoric times.

Archeological site

Sibiloi National Park is famous for the known fossils that is used for research and the visitors with the help of the guides. The Koobi Flora where the fossil remain has largely contributed to understanding of the man’s evolution kind worldwide.

There is also semi desert for those interested to view semi desert and the plants growing in such areas, the Turkana Lake which the biggest desert lake in the whole world.

Game viewing.

Game viewing in Sibiloi National Park is a magnificent activity as many of the animals are adapted to the arid area where the place receives little or even no rain falls throughout the year. Some of these animals include, Grevys Zebras, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Greater Kudus, Caracals, Cheetahs, Striped and Spotted Hyenas, Jackals and many other animals are seen in the national park. For the visitors who are coming to this national park mostly for the fossil experience, get a visit to view this wildlife too as a supplement.

Nature walks.

The tourists here are guided through the petrified forests and the Koobi Fora spit. The nature walks offering up-close experience by allowing the visitors to observe the attraction closely. These are guided as they try to explain to the visitors more about the fossil and also making research.

Cultural experience.

The visitors are given a chance to communicate to community people freely as they get information about the park and their behavior. Communities like the nearby Gabbra tribe Turkana and Dassanach who are all rich cultures provide information. The groups like the Turkana practice cattle rearing as pastoralists in the national park during the dry season freely, other tribes like the Samburu and Rendille nomads stay with the surrounding areas of the national park.
