Watamu Marine National Park
Watamu Marine National Park is situated along the Northern coast covering 120 kms North of Mombasa and known to have coral reefs, diverse marine life and pristine beaches. The park is among the first marine parks in Kenya enhancing eco tourism and marine conservation. It is ideal for all travelers interested in diving, nature adventures and remarkable beach getaways. The park covers an area of about 10 square kilometers of protected marine and tidal habitats stretching to 300 meters offshore and easily accessible from Watamu town. Travelers can reach Watamu via a 30-minute drive from Malindi or a 2.5-hour drive from Mombasa. The closest airport is Malindi Airport, which is about 25 kms away.
Watamu Marine National Park consists of more than 150 species of hard and soft corals i.e brain corals, fan corals and sponges. In the waters are more than 500 species of fish, such as parrotfish, lionfish, and sweetlips. Larger marine species like manta rays, whale sharks and humpback dolphins are also present. The park is particularly noted for its sea turtle nesting sites, hosting green, hawksbill, and occasionally olive ridley turtles.
